People usually believe that plants need fertiliser. The real story is that plants are fed by the soil organisms. Our job as gardeners is to feed the soil organisms and give them a good home. A huge population of worms in your garden tells you that you are doing a good job.

"Castelen" has many visitors including overseas students. We teach them that the first step in having a healthy garden is to get the soil minerals balanced and have lots of organic matter.

We teach how to avoid pests and disease so that even the strawberries are safe from slugs and birds and you don't have to cover them: no netting, no fences, no worries.

The harvest at Castelen provides a kaleidoscope of colours and textures.

Training groups come to Castelen regularly to get hand on experience in preparing new ground, weeding, planting, fertilizing and preparing seed boxes.

Birds, insects, caterpillars and diseases are nature's garbage disposal experts. Their job is to destroy food that is lacking in nutrients and therefore is unhealthy..

Having the whole family (and the dog) involved in harvesting turns a simple task into a celebration of the abundance of nature and strengthens the family unit.

Soil workforce comes in many different colours, shapes and sizes.

Giant sized potatoes, cabbages, cauliflowers and broccoli grow without chemical fertilizers. The secret is to have lots of organic matter, a balance of nutrients and a large workforce in the soil whose job is to feed the plants.

Commitment makes things happen unless......

Hi [FIRSTNAME],

The action of commitment makes things happen. When you really commit to having your own garden and growing your own vegetables, the first step is to take action. If you follow the Healthy Growing plan you start in straight away so that within a few short weeks you can look forward to your first harvest.

Of course you first have to decide where you are going to put your garden and how big you want it to be. Perhaps you set yourself a goal. Perhaps you draw a mental picture of what you're going to achieve. These are all steps in turning a dream into a reality.

These are important first steps and they put you under the gun so that you take action.

Unless.....

Let me tell you a story. I run group workshops and I've been doing this for many years. Everyone gets excited about what they're going to achieve. In one group there was a lady who was full of enthusiasm. She was going to set up a garden. She waned to grow her own vegetables because she really understood how important it is to do this, and she was really motivated to get started but.....

The 'but' was that she didn't have anywhere for a garden. She lived in a rented flat. Could she start her garden in a planter box on the balcony?

Feeling a bit sad that she was so enthusiastic and didn't have any way to put her plans into action, I offered a small area of my garden for her to use.

She thought this was wonderful.

During the training programme she'd learnt how to propagate seedlings and plant seeds. Her seedling box was all ready to plant out. She got busy and weeded the small area of garden, fertilized it and planted a variety of vegetables.

A few days later she went to visit her new garden. Some of the seedlings had died because they hadn't been watered. A few of the seeds had germinated but many didn't. She'd forgotten to mulch the garden as we'd suggested, so weeds were starting to grow. It looked a bit sad.

I don't really know what this lady expected. Instant success, without effort, perhaps? Or maybe it was just that she really didn't have the strength of her convictions. Perhaps she didn't really believe she could achieve her dream. Whatever it was, it was quite obvious that the reality and the vision didn't match. I don't think the lady ever visited that little patch of garden again.

Sadly, what she doesn't know, and what I didn't have the heart to tell her, was that many of her plants did grow and in time produced healthy heads of broccoli, huge bunches of spinach and long straight carrots. If I'd had to give her a grade, I would have given her C for results and F for effort. She made a great start, but the commitment and conviction that she could be successful just weren't there.

Why am I telling you this story?

Some people need more than commitment. They need a step-by-step action plan, and a series of deadlines and encouragement that what they are doing is right. Perhaps you are one of those people.

Here's the good news.

If you don't have a vision, I'll lend you mine until yours has had the time to grow strong and healthy.

If you don't have conviction, borrow some of mine. I know that you'll be successful if you put in the time and do the things that I know will guarantee success.

If you don't have the knowledge, learn from me. I've spent decades investigating, researching and applying the knowledge I would like to share with you.

That's what the Healthy Growing programme gives you. That is why you should go to www.healthygardenfood.com right now and see what the programme offers. You'll learn how to

  • Start your garden without having to dig and weed
  • Fertilize and balance the soil so that your plants will be nutrient rich and full of delicious tastes and textures
  • Propagate your own seedlings and plant your seeds
  • Minimise weed growth
  • Maximise your yield in a small area of land
  • Select the right crops for each season
  • Build soil micro-organism and worm populations
  • Grow healthy, disease and pest free fruit and vegetables without the need for poisonous pesticides and fungicides

...and so much more.

In fact, you'll be amazed at the wealth of information, useful tips, interesting facts and down-to-earth practical know-how that you will become a true "master gardener" in a very short space of time.

In just 12 months you'll learn so much that from then on you'll have absolutely no doubts that you can be successful.

And with each success you'll gain in confidence and commitment and before you know it, your vision will be translated into reality. It's an exciting journey. I know. I've travelled the road you're about to embark upon.
